The use of nursing beds in private homes is sky rocketing. One major factor that is contributing to this trend is the rising cost of quality nursing home care. Magic Johnson Drives Dagger through Heart of Cordate
Cordate Healthcare 2 Select Medical 6
Brian Johnson’s late strike rounded off an excellent Select team performance away to Leicester side Cordate Healthcare. The eagerly awaited Intercare Trophy clash certainly lived up to expectation in a rousing encounter at the St Margaret’s Pastures Stadium.
As anticipated, both teams adopted a cautious start to proceedings, but the deadlock was broken halfway through the first half when Select debutant James Pilkington latched on to a through ball to fire past a helpless Mark Tansey in goal. Moments later, the Cordate keeper was to deny Pilkington a second with a superb save, diving fully to his left and tipping the ball over the crossbar.
At the other end, Luke Mulligan came closest to equalising for the home side when his effort was bravely charged down by the impressive Kris Golden. Towards the end of the half, Cordate began to turn the screw and player/manager Paul Tansey blazed an opportunity wildly over the bar when a pass inside may have been a better option. However, parity was restored just before the break when Richard Glover found himself unmarked at the far post and he finished neatly ending a slick passing move between Lessaman and Tansey (P).
The start to the second half saw the Invacare guest duo of Jamie Lessaman (Cordate) and Glen Hockley (Select) begin to have more of an impact on the game. Lessaman saw a decent drive just fly over the crossbar. Hockley watched his first effort on goal brilliantly saved by inform goalkeeper Mark Tansey. Soon after, strikes from Keith McDonald and then Pilkington opened a two goal cushion for the away side. McDonald danced through the Cordate defence avoiding a last ditch tackle by John Mulligan before slotting the ball home; Pilkington’s effort was a simple side-foot finish.
Cordate threw everything at Select in search of a second, but were caught on the break when the unusually out of sorts Ray Booth finally made a telling pass to setup Hockley, who calmly finished high to the keepers left. A fifth quickly followed when McDonald grabbed his second, rolling the ball under the advancing keeper. Mulligan (L) pulled one back for the home side when he charged down the right before firing his effort in to the bottom corner. There was just enough time for Johnson to grab a superb sixth for the away side; he hit a superb first-time volley that found its way in off the post.
Winning Captain McDonald said “the performance was excellent; we seemed a bit leggy in the first half though” blaming the long journey down. “Our second half showing was much improved and we made the most of our opportunities”. Gracious in defeat, Cordate player/manager Tansey (P) commented “the best team won on the night, but we aim to win back the trophy when we head north later in the year. A crippling injury list and a lack of preparation scuppered our chances of victory”. When questioned about his ‘cramp like’ injury late in the game, Tansey replied firmly “it’s a recurrence of an old injury”!!!
Although the final score line may have flattered the travelling side, it was a deserved victory and the Intercare Trophy heads north.
